Referrals and advice
There are lots of ways that GPs can receive advice and guidance about a speciality or specific patient, including:
NHS e-Referral Service
All the services we provide via the NHS e-Referral Service have Advice and Guidance enabled. This allows GPs to identify a patient from their clinical system, choose the appropriate service on the system and submit a question directly to the consultant.
The NHS e-Referral Service allows the GP to attach documents, letters, scans etc. The Consultant/Clinician reply will be sent directly to the GP and can be converted into an appointment request by the GP if required.

Advice and guidance
All referrals for the first outpatient appointments must be made through the NHS Electronic Referral Service.
GPs and clinicians can use the Electronic Referral Service to either Refer a Patient or to submit an ‘Advice and Guidance ’ request to a consultant before making a referral.
