Therapies and rehabilitation

We offer physiotherapy and occupational therapy services at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, University Hospital Lewisham and community settings throughout the London Borough of Lewisham.

Our physiotherapy and occupational therapy teams assess and treat patients with temporary or permanent disabilities. Our goal is to help you improve your physical functions and prevent further issues.

Physiotherapy helps restore your movement and function to as close to normal as possible after you've been affected by injury, illness, or disability.

We offer a full range of physiotherapy services for inpatients and outpatients.

If you are registered with a Lewisham GP, you can self-refer for certain physiotherapy services - see the box at the bottom of this page to fill in your referral.

How to get a referral

You can be referred to our outpatient departments by your GP, hospital consultants or other health professionals such as specialist nurses and occupational therapists.

If you are an inpatient, the physiotherapist who will see you on the ward may refer you for further treatment after you have been discharged from hospital.

Facilities available

Our Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy departments feature two gyms, a hydrotherapy pool and activities of daily living rehabilitation facilities.

In addition, the Stroke Unit (Beech Ward) has a gym and kitchen facility within the ward. An additional gym for inpatient rehabilitation is located on the second floor of the Riverside building.

Physiotherapy (self-referral)

If you’re aged 16 or over and registered with a Lewisham GP, you can refer yourself to physiotherapy. Self-referral is often the quickest and easiest way to be seen by a physiotherapist.

Our physiotherapists are specialists in musculoskeletal health and movement and can support you to improve and manage these conditions.

Our physiotherapy team will review the information you give us and arrange an appointment. If you need to see a doctor first or instead, they will let you know.
